These are not etiquette suggestions. They are the load-bearing structure of a game with no referee, no scoreboard and no consequence for cheating other than not being invited back. Pickup basketball is one of the few remaining places where a group of strangers reliably self-governs, and it does so because the punishment — social exclusion — is immediate and total.

The interesting part is how consistent it is. Walk onto a court in Manila, Lagos or Sacramento and the contract is broadly the same. Nobody taught anyone. It just propagated, court by court, for a century.
